The Story Behind Megan in the Midwest
Back in the long ago year of 2015, my life was changing drastically. I graduated college the year before, started dating Colin, moved to Florida together, accepted my first full time teaching job, adopted a dog, and began life as a real adult. This was also the year that the world of Instagram blogging and social media influencing really took off. I can vividly remember idolizing fashion bloggers; not because they were getting tons of likes and followers, but because they just looked like they were having so much fun. I wanted to have that fun too.
I’ve always found joy in photography. I grew up as a 10 year 4-H member, and one of my summer projects each year (in addition to showing llamas…ha!) was photography. Whether I was taking portraits or curating a board of 10+ photographs to present to the judges, that’s really when my love affair with photography began. And once I saw a handful of gals sharing their travel pictures, and their outfit of the day pictures, I thought…why can’t I do that?
But I had no idea where to start. What would I call my blog? How do you even make a website? What if people thought my pictures were terrible and nobody liked them? What would my friends think? What if people judged me? How would I ever live it down if I failed miserably? I lived in that cloud of doubt for months. Colin, bless his heart, listened with love and patience to my long list of insecurities for so long. Finally, after I chose a name but debated whether or not to really even go for it, he took the plunge for me and purchased the domain for Megan’s Mosaic. No more thinking about it. It was here and I was doing the damn thing!
I chose the name Megan’s Mosaic because the word mosaic essentially means a collage of images/colors to form a picture. When brainstorming blog names, I knew I wanted something alliterative, and I spent weeks looking through different words that started with the letter “m,” but nothing quite fit. And then I stumbled upon the word mosaic. I thought…this is perfect. A collage of my life. And thus Megan’s Mosaic was born!
For 5 years, Megan’s Mosaic provided me with a place to share my love of travel, countless pictures of coffee, and all about my life. Megan’s Mosaic has been there through our life in Florida, the 3 years we lived in Austin, Texas, and even now as we moved back to Indiana to plant our roots. When we lived in Austin, I was surrounded by so many incredibly talented bloggers and influencers and photographers. There was no shortage of resources about the best places to eat, drink, shop, and explore in both Austin and Texas in general. When we moved back to Indiana, I found that there was really a lack of content focused specifically on Indianapolis, outside of fashion. I had trouble finding any blog posts about the best patios in Indianapolis or the best french fries or the best happy hours. It was really out of frustration that I began toying with the idea of changing the scope of my blog (well, really, my Instagram, because I have not been dutiful about writing for fun…more on that later) to be less focused on my life and more focused on places we can all enjoy. I bounced various name ideas and logos off of my friends (Mom, Candice, Colin, Liz, Larkin, A-Mac…and so many more!!), and landed on Megan in the Midwest.
I’m so glad you’re here. If you’ve been with me since 2015, THANK YOU for sticking around as I work through writing slumps and creativity lags and aesthetic feed changes. What you can expect to get out of Megan in the Midwest is tips (and photos!!) on where to eat, what to do, and where to stay in the Midwest. If there’s something you’re looking for but can’t find, just ask! I probably have a recommendation. CHEERS
