a 24 hour guide to charleston, NC

Hi everyone!! It has been a hot minute since I have done literally ANY actual writing on Megan’s Mosaic. I largely post my content on Instagram (peep my pics at @megansmosaic), but I am really hoping to change that this school year, now that I will have a little more time on my hands!

What have I been up to lately now that school is out for the summer? Well, I’ve been spending as much time as humanly possible reading next to the pool. I’ve also been chipping away at various writing projects (I have started like 3-4 short stories that I hope to turn into full fledged novels, but it’s so hard, y’all). Also, drinking lots of coffee and cuddling with the dog and going to see discount movies on Tuesdays with the hubby. Life. Is. GOOD.

I am currently on what my family and friends not-so-jokingly call the #MeganSmithWorldTour (though my husband would prefer I call it the #MeganSmithContinentalUSTour, but that doesn’t have the same ring to it!!).  I left Austin on July 10th, and I’m not returning until July 31st! I visited one of my girlfriends in Charleston, spent a week in the Hilton Head area with my fabulous mother in law, and am currently visiting another girlfriend in Indianapolis before heading up to my parent’s house in Northeast Indiana, and then eventually to DC to visit my little brother while he’s there for his internship!

I only spent a grand total of 24 hours in Charleston! Like actually. So, I want to share a few of the places that I went and absolutely adored!

1. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit – I ordered the Bacon, Egg, and Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich and it was to die for! I was also very pleasantly surprised by how delicious their iced coffee was (my go to order is iced coffee with vanilla and a splash of cream, always). A definite must go to for breakfast.

2. Charleston South of Broad area – Historic Downtown Charleston has so many different areas! One of my favorite areas was the area known as South of Broad – aka, south of Broad Street. This area has many different residential buildings, some of which date back to the 1700’s! It also has the famous Rainbow Row area. So many ‘grammable places, too little time. The best way to explore this area of downtown is either by carriage or by foot. Which leads me to…

3. Old South Carriage Company  – My gal pal, Larkin, and I went on a carriage tour with Old South Carriage Co. and holy cow it was so informative! Bless her heart for taking me, even though she has probably been on those tours 1,000 times because she is a CHS local and has family ties to the company. This carriage ride was SO worth it! They usually range from $20-$30 depending on time of day, but this is a really great way to learn about the historical aspects of Charleston. Would definitely recommend this, especially if you want to sight see but it’s hot out (totally beats walking, amirite?!).

4. Blind Tiger Pub – Another recommendation from my girl Larkin. She took me here and I literally swear I have never had better “pub” food. The garlic truffle fries were the fries of my dreams, and the sandwich I ordered was also delicious.

5. Sugar Bakeshop – Stopped at this cute little place because I had seen so many pictures of it on Instagram, and it did not disappoint! The shop itself is actually sort of small, but the cupcakes were scrumptious. I ordered the vanilla with strawberry frosting (made with fresh strawberries!!), and the chocolate with coconut almond frosting. Y U M.

6. American Theatre – Remember that scene from The Notebook when Allie and Noah went to the movies and then walked down the street and decided to just lay down smack in the middle of the road? That location is also in Charleston, and it’s just as cute as you remember it.

7. Waterfront Park – Great views of the Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter, and there is a pineapple shaped water fountain! Perfect for that Charleston photo op. I’ve been to Charleston before, and we did the Fort Sumter tour. If you have time and you like historical places, I would definitely take the time to do this!

All the places I wanted to go, but didn’t have time for:

  • 52 Meeting St (supposedly this house is beautiful in the spring)
  • Eli’s Table
  • Second State Coffee
  • The Watch Rooftop Kitchen
  • The Daily
  • Leon’s Fine Poultry and Oyster Shop
  • Butcher and Bee
